Music
Music played a big part in the lives of citizens during the World War because it gave the people a sense of release and helped them focus on things other than the fighting. One of the most well-known songs created during this time was “The Moonlight Serenade”, which is still very popular to this day. Jazz music was extremely prevalent in the 1940s; however, the music industry started to struggle due to the war. The music business was seen as unnecessary for the war effort, therefore, the materials used to create records, instruments, and jukeboxes were used in other areas. In addition to the loss, many talented musicians were drafted off to war, which shrank the music force within the cities.
On the bright side, men being drafted off to armies gave women the opportunity to start up their own music groups. Raising money, playing for dances--women did them all. People didn’t really care about who was playing the music, as long as there was music to be played. Music just could not be stopped, no matter how much it was restricted by earlier curfews or lack of resources. Even when it was banned, people would continue listening to records secretly. Jazz music helped people get through the most difficult times. Some famous singers during this time included Marlene Dietrich, Vera Lynn, and Glen Miller.
