Interview Excerpts
Ruth had always wanted to be a nurse. As she heard more and more stories from her friends and family members that came back from war, her desire to enlist grew even more, until finally, her roommate and her decided to enlist at Camp Grant in Rockford. However, when they entered the Army, they had had no basic training, which was probably due to the face that the men didn’t think women needed to learn much and spent more of their time teaching the men. Later, the women quickly learned the training, and when the call came that a city had been invaded, everyone was ready. The men left first--which shows the gender roles of men always going first while women have to wait and are chosen second. What scared Ruth, however, were stories of the women being raped and killed. Women were seen as defenseless useless objects—the weaker species.
In this interview of Ruth Aitken, we will see how her experience was like serving in World War II as First Lieutenant in Army Nurse Corps. , and worked hard to make it prominent in society.

In this interview with Nova Etta Wagner, we’ll once again see the gender roles given to men and women. During the war, she taught school and worked at a factory. This supports the sentence earlier about how women were expected to take over the men’s jobs while the men were off fighting. It was all the start of the elimination of the line between men and women. Women were desperately needed to fill the vacant job spots.
